چکیده
Abstract An extensive deposit of agate occurs in Pedro González Island the Gulf Panama. Previous archaeological research showed that was exploited between 6200 and 5600 cal BP to make stone tools found at oldest known Preceramic human settlement Pearl archipelago. We constrain here origin geological context through a geochemical study island. show it includes primary volcanic breccias, lavas, tuffaceous marine deposits with sedimentary conglomerates debris flow deposits, which we define as Formation. This formation records submarine subaerial activity along an island arc during Oligo-Miocene, confirming previous regional models favour progressive emergence isthmus early Miocene. The igneous rocks have extreme tholeiitic character is interpreted reflect magmatic cessation eastern Panama hosted andesitic lavas unusually large amygdales up 20–40 cm diameter, well small (0.1–1.0 cm) bimodal distribution, veins. size agates made them suitable for tool manufacture. Field evidence suggests resulted from subaqueous lava–sediment interaction, water released unconsolidated base lava flows rose coalesced, accumulated below chilled top, subsequent hydrothermal mineralization. These could therefore be regarded unusual result combined peperitic processes.

Massive submarine gas output during the volcanic unrest off Panarea Island (Aeolian arc, Italy): Inferences for explosive conditions
The possibility of understanding natural processes leading to explosive events in volcanic systems provides advantages for a better management of possible volcanic crises. On account of the possibility of the occurrence of other phenomena, such as tsunamis, the explosions driven by submarine volcanic systems are of particular interest, although little investigated. The recent sudden increase in...
متن کاملBiotic Contributions to the Formation of Submarine Iron-rich Hydrothermal Crusts near the Panarea Island, Tyrrhenian
Introduction: Recent volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity of the Aeolian Arc (SE Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) have been studied for the past 30 years [1,2]. The discovery of metalliferous hot spring deposits in the Pacific in the 1960’s stimulated exploration for this type of deposit in the Tyrrhenian Sea [3,4] because there they occur at much shallower depths. Hydrothermal systems in the T...
متن کاملLiana Abundance, Diversity, and Distribution on Barro Colorado Island, Panama
Lianas are a key component of tropical forests; however, most surveys are too small to accurately quantify liana community composition, diversity, abundance, and spatial distribution - critical components for measuring the contribution of lianas to forest processes. In 2007, we tagged, mapped, measured the diameter, and identified all lianas ≥1 cm rooted in a 50-ha plot on Barro Colorado Island...

Hazel Heckman is absorbed by the identification and general splendor of all living things. She has filled her most recent book with delightful descriptions of life as it is represented in its varied forms on Anderson Island in Puget Sound. Although her attention to wildflowers, weeds, trees, insects, birds, and animals seems a bit excessive, one is easily swept away by her enthusiasm for all of...
متن کاملMelt inclusions from Marianas arc lavas: implications for the composition and formation of island arc magmas
We have measured the major and trace element compositions of a suite of olivine-hosted melt inclusions in basaltic lavas from the islands of Agrigan and Guguan (one sample each) from the Mariana arc, part of the larger Izu–Bonin–Mariana system. The two lava samples examined show distinctly different chemical signatures that are considered to represent the dominance of sediment melt (Agrigan) or...
